ABOUT THAT AUGUST COVER

Our August cover artwork went a step further than usual, showing how The CPA Journal logo would appear if actually viewed through the imaginary plane on which the pen was writing. The design meeting was longer than usual, and the decision not to draw attention to the visual pun by explaining or even mentioning it inside was a conscious one: We wanted to see if you would notice and, if you noticed, what you thought. We became even more committed to the concept when getting approval from the postal authorities became a surprising challenge—but the design, conceived by Art Director Ron Reeves, prevailed.

The response was swift in e-mails, phone calls, and comments in person. Some readers saw the reversed type and assumed it was an appalling mistake—and maybe a valuable collectible. Others didn’t notice until someone pointed it out to them. Others put the type-play and photo together, and got the point. But nobody responded better than one Vermont reader:
