For this month's Millennium Series article, former Editor-in-Chief James L. Craig, Jr., interviews AICPA President Barry C. Melancon.
The AICPA today is at a crossroads: It is poised to become a major e-commerce player by creating a publicly owned business-to-business (B2B) web portal and has plans to create a new business designation (now called XYZ) for non-CPA professionals. If its plans proceed, the basic fiber of the organization will have changed dramatically.
These developments are occurring while the accounting profession is reacting to other major events, including the SEC's questioning the effectiveness of the profession's self-regulation.
Melancon talks candidly and in detail about these and other issues in a thought-provoking interview. *
