NEW JERSEY ADR CONFERENCE

CPAs in New Jersey in June 1998 joined about 250 people from the business and legal communities, construction and insurance industries, and the government sector in the second annual ADR state conference called "ADR: Make It Your Business."

The conference, co-sponsored by the New Jersey Society of CPAs, featured breakout sessions on different aspects of ADR. CPAs participated as speakers in a number of sessions: Sam Rosenfarb and Alan Winters, divorce mediation; Bernard Sobel, Joan P. D'Uva, and Brian T. Moore, risk management; Philip Levine, construction; and David Zaumeyer, international ADR.

The keynote speaker was George H. Friedman, Esq., American Arbitration Association senior vice president. He spoke about how alternative dispute resolution processes have become an important option for many companies (see The CPA Journal, March 1998, page 59) as a form of risk management and not just as an alternative to litigation. According to Friedman, "Wouldn't you rather do business than waste precious time and resources fighting about it in the courts, or worse, have your day in court delayed for years because of massive backlogs?" *
